BIOGRAPHY:
[1950-]
Cousin of Chuck JACKSON-Born in Greenville, South Carolina.
Black soul/funk singer who started as a gospel singer. Ann
married saxophone player Melvin Burton (who later played
saxophone in Moses Dillard's band) and they moved from gospel to
secular club playing with their focus by 1970 towards soul and
funk music. In 1971, Ann Sexton was spotted by songwriter David
Lee who recorded a soul number titled "You're Letting Me Down" /
"You've Been Gone Too Long" on the tiny Impel label and it
didn't go anywhere. She then signed with John R's Seventy-Seven
Record label who re-released "You've Been Gone Too Long" in
1972. Ann Sexton released six 45's in total for the
Seventy-Seven label including "You're Gonna Miss Me" in 1973 and
the funk number "You're Losing Me"
in 1974 which was coupled with the soulful ""Love,
Love, Love".
