En 1977, ce groupe est crée comme une "plaisanterie", mais qu'est ce que cette plaisanterie va avoir comme succès! Les VILLAGE PEOPLE vont conquérir le monde avec leur génial concept. Au printemps 1977, se baladant les rues de Greenwitch Village les deux compères voient leur attention attirés par un grand mec, habillé tel un indien. Ils le suivent dans le bar où ce gars bosse, en temps que "Go-Go dancer". En discutant avec lui, ils apprennent que beaucoup de gens adorent se déguiser ainsi. Le jour même, ils se rendent dans un club pour constater ce fait, et...boom, le concept prend place de lui-même; créer un groupe axé sur la communauté Gay, et leur déguisements.
Felipe ROSE, "l'indien", est le premier des membres recruté. Pour les autres, ils appliquent le même système que pour les RITCHIE FAMILY, et ainsi ils auditionne les plus excentriques personnes du coin. Toutefois, les autres membres doivent savoir danser et chanter. C'est ainsi que les 5 autres éléments du VILLAGE PEOPLE sont réunis ; Randy JONES, David "Scar" HODO, Glen HUGHES, Alexander BRILEY et le chanteur Victor WILLIS.
Sans même avoir enregistré la moindre chanson, un contrat est signé avec CASABLANCA. Le premier album a un concept simple : visiter toutes les places les plus chaudes du monde Gay aux Etats-Unis!. Dès que le vinyle sort en juillet 1977, le succès est immédiat. Le premier 45t est certifié "Or" le 18 septembre 1977, alors qu'il n'est même pas classé dans les charts!!!
La période de l'automne est mis à profit pour enregistrer de nouvelles chansons et faire du "Body Building". En mars 1978, le 45t "Macho Man" est le titre qui assoie définitivement le groupe comme un incontournable du Disco, classé et vendu à 2 Millions d'albums.
Le troisième Album en septembre 1978 "Crusin'", voit apparaître "Y.M.C.A". Tout le monde connaît les paroles, et tout le monde sait désormais que les "Y.M.C.A" de Manhattan, San Fransisco & Hollywood sont "Chauds". Bien sûr ce n'a pas été du goût de l'administrateur de cette association, qui a voulu engager une action en justice. Mais M & B ont réussi à le convaincre que finalement c'était bon pour l'image des "Y.M.C.A". Ceci à été rendu vrai par l'immense succès du titre qui a été classé n° 2 aux U.S.A. C'est également ce titre qui a permis de faire connaître le groupe à tout le monde et de "sortir" du public Gay.
En 1979, c'est "In The Navy", un titre écrit par MORAILI juste après la vision d'un clip pour la "U.S Navy", "Nous te voulons comme nouvelle recrue!", et ventant les plaisirs d'être marin. C'est à nouveau une n°2. L'U.S Navy, ne s'inquiète pas d'être sponsorisé par ce groupe Gay et les autorise même à venir réaliser leur clip sur un des bateau de la flotte.(Cette chanson à fait l'objet d'un remake en 1994 par les PET SHOP BOYS).
L'année 1979, se termine avec "Live & Sleazy", album sur lequel apparaît un nouveau chanteur Ray SIMPSON, le frère de Valérie SIMPSON des ASHFORD & SIMPSON. Mais les années 1980, voit le succès s'envoler, avec l'éloignement de leur public privilégié. Cela ne fait rien un autre projet est en route, le film "Can't Stop The Music". Un désastre cinématographique, mais...2 millions de disques vendus.
Fin 1977, that group was lauched as a joke.... By jive WHAT A JOKE! VILLAGE PEOPLE conquered the world with that genius concept. At spring 77, while walking the streets of Grenwich Village, the two producers have their attention capted by a big guy dressed like an indian. They follow him to the bar he work in as a "go-go boy". While conversing, they learn that there are a lot of people whom like to deguise themselves. The same day, they go to a club where a lot of people are deguise and boom......the concept take place; building a group focalized on the gay community.
Felipe ROSE, the indian "go-go boy" is the first member. For the others, the same small add system as RITCHIE FAMILY's one is used, and the see all the excentric persons doing they're shown on us. However the other people must have to know how to dance and sing. Finally the other 5 members are reunited; Randy JONES, David "Scar" HODO, Glen HUGHES, Alexander BRILEY and lead singer Victor WILLIS. All from Greenwich Village, the will become the VILLAGE PEOPLE.
Even before
having recorded any song, a contract is signed with
CASABLANCA. The first album has simple theme; visit all the
hot gay place of America.
As soon as the vinyl is out in july 77, success is
immediate. The First gold single arrived on September 18,
1977, while none single is charted !!!.
Autumn and winter are used to record new songs, and ...body building. In march 78, "Macho Man" is the single that definitively establish the group, charting and selling 2 millions albums.
Third lp out in september 78 "Cruisin'" is about ...crusin' from club to club. That's the time for "YMCA". Everybody now knows the lyrics, also that Manhattan, San Fransisco & Hollywood YMCA's used to be Hot gay places. It was not the taste of the administrator of that association. They tried to begin an auction. But M & B convicted them that the song was good for their image. That was true due the success, even if the song only charted number 2 on the States. It is also that song that made dicover the group to the other communities, and to to the whole world.
In 1979 "In the Navy" written by MORALI after having saw an advertising for the US navy ("we want you as a new recrue") also talk about the american navy pleasures...It's another second chart place. US navy don't bother the lyrics and permit B & M to record a video CLIP on one of their Boat. That song has been remake by the PET SHOP BOYS in 1994.
Year 1979
ended with the "Live and Sleazy" album on which a new
vocalist appear; Ray SIMPSON. RAY IS THE BROTHER OF Valerie
SIMPSON of Ashford & SIMPSON.
But the 80's debut is
bad for the VILLAGE
PEOPLE. With the success they came away their initial gay
community audience. It doesn't matter a new project is on
the road, the movie "I can't Stop the Music". A desater for
the movie, a 2 million seller for the vinyl album, which
contains new songs, excepted "YMCA".
