1979 est en Europe l'année DU succès de "Born To Be Alive". Un succès qui a été bien plus loin que quiconque pouvait l'imaginer. Un succès qui est intemporel depuis.
Professeur d'anglais, Patrick HERNANDEZ achète sa première guitare en 1963 après avoir découvert les BEATLES, à londres. C'est ainsi qu'il commence en tant que musiciens avec plusieurs groupes à tourner autour de PARIS. En 1970, durant un séjour dans le sud de la France avec son amie, il rencontre un groupe dont il devient le chanteur. C'est ainsi qu'il apprend le rude métier des tournées et des scènes ; plus de 5 heures parfois, et plus de 50 titres joués. En 1973 la maison de disque de Claude FRANCOIS lui propose un contrat qu'il refuse pour rejoindre un nouveau groupe PARIS PALACE HOTEL.
C'est lors d'une session d'enregistrement pour le groupe qu'il compose "Born To Be Alive", au départ un rock californien. Le groupe enregistre deux 45T, et malgré les efforts du manager Jan Van LOO, l'album ne sortira jamais. En 1976, las du milieu Patrick quitte la musique pour l'élevage!.
Deux années passent, c'est en 1978, que Jan Van LOO, le re-contacte pour qu'il se rende d'urgence à BRUXELLES pour enregistrer une chanson "Making Love". Cela plaît à Patrick! Bien sûr entre les sessions d'enregistrement Patrick gratte sa guitare, et joue..."Born To Be Alive". Jan L'entend et, est...intrigué.
Le
jeu dure plusieurs jours....et Jan se décide à enregistrer
un maquette, mais selon l'idée qu'il en a. Un tempo rapide
de 133 BMP. Durant cette même session, Hervé TOLANCE (un
ancien de PARIS PALACE HOTEL), fait écouter à Patrick le
fameux "riff" de guitare du SPENCER DAVIS GROUP 'Gimme Some
Lovin' / Live version"), ce même riff qui va devenir la
fameuse introduction. Maintenant, si le titre est en boîte,
aucune maison de disque française n'en veut!. Cela ne change
rien, le titre passe sur le radios Italiennes, les radios
libres, et c'est un HIT ÉNORME. Au Midem 1979, Patrick
reçoit un disque d'or alors que le titre n'est même
pas commercialisé en France. C'est CBS qui va arracher le
morceau, et l'appuyer avec une énorme promotion, dont des
passages télé avec des danseur. Vous voyez où je veux en
venir ?. Oui, vous le savez bien MADONNA a en effet assuré
la promo de ce titre.
Le succès va durer deux années tout autour du monde. La promotion se termine en 1981 au CHILI avec plus de 23 millions de 45t vendus et 56 disques d'or.
Quelle histoire, comme quoi le succès est vraiment imprévisible.

English teacher, Patrick HERNANDEZ brought is first guitar in 1963 after discovering the BEATLES while a travel in LONDON. Then he began with several group touring around PARIS. In 1970, while in a week-end in the south of France, with his girlfriend, he meat a group whom where looking for a singer. So he became singer, and learned the hard way of scene touring; more than 5 hour a show, and more than 50 songs to perform. In 1973 Claude FRANCOIS's Label proposed him a contract, he refused it because he joined at the same time a group named "PARIS PALACE HOTEL".
While composing a album for this group, he wrote "born to be alive", a very californian rock. This group recorded two 7" inches, but in spite of Jan Van Loo efforts the album had never be out. In 1976, faded out, Patrick go out the business and began cow rearing; yes you well read!!!.
Two years later, so in 1978, Jan Van Loo rang him for asking him to go quickly in Brussell in order to record a song "Making love". Patrick enjoyed it, and after recording sessions, he use to take his guitar and play his compositions. While playing "Born to be alive" Jan Van Loo is intriguing.
The
same game followed
a few days before Jan decide to record this song. But the
producer give an extremly precise canvas; he knows what he
wants. Tempo must be 133 BPM, drums, must be "on the stage".
While in studio, ex-"PARIS PALACE HOTEL" member Hervé
TOLANCE show to patrick a fabulous guitar riff borrowed to
SPENCER DAVIES GROUP and from a live version of "Gimme some
lovin'". It will be the
famous introduction. If the title is recorded,
french labels doesn't want it anymore. No problems , the
song is performed by italian radios, the free ones, because
the movement also began at the same period. "Born to be
alive" is a big ITALIAN hit. At 79's MIDEM at CANNES,
Patrick recieved his first gold single before he was
distributed in France. CBS France signed him immediatly, but
a massive promotion has be done, touring with dancers. (Hey
you know where I want to drive you...). Yes Madona, herself
while she was unknowed toured with patrick for the
promotion.
The success will remain during two years all around the
world. Promotion ended in 1981 in Chili. Sellings are more
over 23 millions of singles, with 56 gold singles.
What a story....you see that success is impredicable.
