Vers 1974, quelques visionnaires noctambules (Mel CHERREN, Larry LEVAN, Michael BRODY, Tom MOULTON, ...) inventèrent le concept de "CLUBBING". Cette innovation engendra un nouveau support de communication musical spécialement adapté pour les discothèques : LE MAXI-45T appelé couramment THE 12" DISCO INCHES. La naissance de ce nouveau format , a eue lieue de façon fortuite et est maintenant l'objet d'une reconnaissance de paternité par plusieurs personnes....Au début de l'ère musicale il y avait les 78 tours. Ensuite vinrent les albums et les 45t (singles). Mais, grâce au développement de la musique BLACK, un nouveau standard musical est né: LE MAXI-45T.
Au début de 1974, les personnes habituées aux "DISCOS" voulaient quelque chose de plus FORT, de NOUVEAU, et certains visionnaires pressentirent ce qui se préparait et qui allait exploser: LE MOUVEMENT DISCO. 25 années plus tard, avec un regard historique, pouvons nous affirmer sans aucun doute que c'est le label New Yorkais SALSOUL, qui pressât le premier MAXI-45T?. Pas sûr!, parce que d'autres labels laissent entendre qu'il ont inventé le concept, ou bien qu'ils l'ont réalisé avant d'autres. Quel fût donc le premier titre réalisé sous ce format ?.
Le site Bmc, fondé en août 1997, a été le PREMIER site à poser la question. Depuis cette période, les choses se sont bien clarifiées, et certaines réponses ont été apportées. Je dois particulièrement remercier AL BOTTCHER pour sa connaissance tout à fait exceptionnelle et sa mémoire infaillible, ainsi que PHIL HUDSON de Disco-Disco (anciennement DISCO-INFERNO) pour ses interview de Tom MOULTON.

In 1974 a few visionnary people (Mel Cherren, Larry Levan, Michael Brody, Tom Moulton) invented new concepts of clubbing. Then came vinyl albums and 7" singles. But thanks to the developpment of black music, a new standard emerged from the disco's: the 12" inch single.
At the early '74, disco people wanted something BIGGER, something NEW, and pioneering people felt what was coming around: THE DISCO EXPLOSION. 25 years later, now with an historic eye, can we affirm without any doubt that it is SALSOUL records that drop the FIRST 12" ?. Uhmm, not sure because, others labels claimed to have invent the concept of the 12" single, or to have release before anyone else, 12" format disco pieces. What was the first title released under 12" inch format ?.
Launched in August 1997, BMC was the FIRST site to submit that question on the web. Since that period the first 12" inch story has finally encounters several answers.
