OFFICIAL BIO:
Label boss Tony Portelli started 4 Liberty Records 10
years ago in 1993, with two DAT's he'd won over a drunken game of
pool with the legendary New York producer Kerri Chandler .
The two tracks in question became the first releases on a UK label
that in it's ten years has become one of Great Britain's most
respected and influential dance labels.
In it's early
years 4 Liberty released production work from the cream of
the US Garage & House scene. Chicago legends Marshall Jefferson,
Farley 'Jackmaster' Funk & Carl Bias all released
singles for the label, whilst New York's Kerri Chandler and
Benji Candelario added their weight to 4 Liberty releases,
helping to make it one of the UK's hot new labels. It was Chicago
house-head Farley Jackmaster Funk who gave 4
Liberty their first bona-fide chart success with a
remixed version of his all-time classic 'Love Can't Turn Around'
in late '96 when the remixed single bounced into the UK top 40.
That hit began a highly successful period for 4 Liberty
that has continued to the present day.
The beginning
of '97 saw big changes in the A&R policy at 4 Liberty, with
label boss Portelli signing UK artists Colour Girl & The
Dreem Teem. Both acts though relatively unknown when signed,
have become trailblazing ambassadors for the UK garage sound, and
have to date scored four hit singles & 3 groundbreaking
compilations between them. The Teem's first hit was in '97 with
'The Theme', & in '99 with a reworking of Neneh Cherry's
classic 'Buddy X 99' which featured MC PSG. The first
compilation in their Dreem Teem 'In
Session' series was released in 1996, Vol 2
(1997) and Vol 3 was released in 2001, entering
the national 10 ten charts. Colour Girl's first release on
the label came in '96 with the now classic 'Tears',
instantly becoming a radio and club anthem, and was the first
single taken from her debut album 'Special'. CG's
first top 40 hit came in February 2000 with her cover of Andy
William's 'Can't Get Used To Losing You'. Next came the smash hit
single 'Joyrider' (You're Playing With Fire) which was
re-released last August with mixes from Artful Dodger &
Y-Tribe .
Over the
years 4 Liberty has had the pleasure with working with some
of the scenes pioneering UK names (Check The Artist Section) .
In the ten years since Tony Portelli set up
4 Liberty , the label has released 65 singles
& 10 albums, helping to change the face of UK dance music &
ushering in a vibrant new music style that is constantly evolving
and gaining a worldwide audience & reputation.
