"Way, way out of Manhattan in the
decaying Brooklyn beach resort of Coney Island, BOTTOM LINE could hardly
be more a typical of a NEW YORK house label. Run by an expartriate
Muscovite Ed "The Red" Goltsman and his wife Nancy Kay, who
together produce all the label's releases, BOTTOM LINE, in common with a
lot of other small labels, was born out of frustration. After making
several records for the VISTA SOUND ORG. in New Jersey (including INTRO's
"Under Your Spell" and the first two RED FOLLIES songs) and not
being enticed by a return to their former work as live musicians touring
bars, weddings and functions playing requests and classic, they figured
they could do better themselves. For a pair who, by their own admission
have little to do with the NEW YORK club scene, their knack of making
smooth, ocassionally disoc-influenced club music in uncanny-though Nelson
Roman, who helps out with production from time to time, must take some of
the credit. Most BOTTOM LINE releases like FLOW's "Another Time"
are dancefloor tailored tracks, but they have a talent asset in the form
of MJ WHITE who sings on the Red Follies records, none of which have yet
made much impact. But with the GOLTSMAN's talent for a killer melody, yiu
can expect them to unleash a monster sooner or later"
